Marking World Environment Day 2026, TERRE Policy Centre successfully launched the TERRE Agroforestry and Soil Carbon Alliance (TASCA) through a virtual event. The programme was conducted entirely in a virtual format, with all speakers and participants joining online from different locations across India, bringing together environmental experts, policymakers, climate practitioners, researchers, and sustainability enthusiasts from across the country.
The event highlighted the crucial role of agroforestry, biochar, and soil carbon management in addressing climate change while enhancing the livelihoods of India's farming communities. TASCA aims to create a collaborative platform that promotes nature-based solutions and transforms sustainable land management practices into meaningful climate action.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Ms. Sneha Bhonsle, Project Lead – Biodiversity, TERRE, who introduced the vision behind TASCA and emphasised the importance of collective action for environmental restoration.
A special highlight of the event was the launch of the book Path to Environmental Sustainability, authored by Dr. Vinitaa Apte, Founder Director, TERRE. The book was formally launched by Dr. Ram Boojh, Former UNESCO Programme Director, who commended the author's vision of integrating environmental sustainability with India's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. He described the publication as a timely guide that encourages sustainable living through environmental stewardship and responsible action.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Ram Boojh shared valuable insights into India's agroforestry potential and its contribution to biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable rural development. He emphasised the importance of integrating trees into agricultural landscapes to secure long-term ecological and economic benefits.
The expert lecture by Mr. Manu Maudgal, Co-Lead India, Climate Parliament, focused on Carbon Credits and Nature-Based Solutions, providing participants with an understanding of carbon markets, agroforestry ecosystems, and the opportunities available for farmers to benefit from climate finance mechanisms.
The official launch of TASCA was presented by Mr. Shrawan Kumar, Head – Programmes & Partnerships, TERRE, who outlined the alliance's vision to promote agroforestry, encourage biochar adoption, enhance soil carbon sequestration, and develop measurable impact frameworks that support both environmental sustainability and rural prosperity.
The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, followed by closing remarks from Dr. Vinitaa Apte, Founder and Director, TERRE. She emphasised the importance of partnerships among governments, civil society organisations, researchers, businesses, and farming communities to accelerate climate action and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
The successful launch of TASCA marks a significant milestone in TERRE Policy Centre's commitment to advancing climate-smart agriculture and promoting nature-based solutions for a greener, more resilient, and sustainable future.
